What I liked

Great Culture, work environment, projects and people. The internships at northwestern mutual allow you to do real work that makes an impact on the business (not just side projects). This company is always growing and looking for ways to benefit their employees and customers and is making good decisions that keep them in the forefront of the financial/insurance industry.

Meet and connect with the people around you, there's a great networking culture at this company and you have the opportunity to learn a lot from people you might not expect to meet at other corporations.

Financial Representative

July 2019 • Farmington, UT

What I liked

It gave me a lot of experience with networking and allowed me to obtain multiple certifications dealing with finance and insurance

What I wish was different

There is actually nothing I want to change about the internship, it gives you hands on experience and does not restrict how much you can accomplish.

Advice

It requires many people to get out of their comfort zone having to reach out to hundreds of people each week trying to gain new connections. I would recommend not slacking off when times get tough, doing so could cause you to fall behind tremendously and will hinder your experience.

The training they gave you and the leadership it taught

What I wish was different

I wish I had kept the mindset I had at the beginning of the internship

Advice

As long as you have motivation and drive, this is a great internship

Financial Representative

June 2019 • Edina, MN

What I liked

I learned what it was like to work in a real business enviornment with professionals. Not only was that very exciting, but I learned how to act in a business meeting with superiors, and one-on-one with clients. Having an internship that taught me real skills that I could take with me forever instead of being the intern that was a coffee runner was great.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known more going into my internship about the everyday activities, but overall I wouldn't take anything back.

Advice

If had to give one piece of advice about my experience, I would say to just be a sponge! Approach every day with a fresh and open mind.

College Financial Representative

December 2018 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

Good opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and really learn the business.

What I wish was different

Wish ongoing training and support would have been better, and pay wasn't strictly based on commission. The main reason I won't be continuing here is because I cannot support myself financially.

Advice

Really learn and understand what you will be doing on a day to day basis, what is expected of you, and think about if the opportunity is right for you before you commit to this internship.

Wealth Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Annapolis, MD

What I liked

Nothing. Freedom to come and go as you please isn't horrible.

What I wish was different

Learned nothing, did not get paid well whatsoever, total lack of ethics and structure. Basically a pyramid scheme. Be aware that this is an MLM and the job requires you to cold call friends and family to try to sell them life insurance.

Advice

Do not take this job unless you absolutely have to.

College Financial Representative

May 2017 • St. George, UT

What I liked

I had the opportunity to build my own business and work directly with real world clients. I also loved the fact that I got exposure to the industry in financial planning services which allowed me to gain both soft and technical skills that are required for the career. I built a strong network with young professionals in the area and started to adapt to a professional culture throughout a workplace.

What I wish was different

Pay is the only thing I can complain about. Since majority of the job is commission based, I always had to play chase (which isn’t a bad thing). But it was scary thinking that my income is dependent on the decision of others in the products and services I recommended.

Advice

Always be networking with people. Whether this helps you professionally or personally it will help you in all aspects of life. The internship thrives off of connections. Even if you don’t stay in the career long term, it’s always good to have good connections throughout the community as it can help with future opportunities.

Financial Planning Intern

May 2019 • Canton, OH

What I liked

As an intern at Northwestern Mutual, you are essentially a full-time financial planner. You go into work every day and do exactly what the full-time employees do. I made some great friends and amazing people throughout the summer. The company also brought all of its employees to Milwaukee for four days to see their headquarters and attend their annual meeting.

What I wish was different

I had a great summer but I wish there was higher base pay.

Advice

The best piece of advice about this experience would be to work hard no matter what and you will not regret it.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The networking and learning experiences they offered for interns were great. I got to work on real applications as a full member of the team.

What I wish was different

I think more training about health insurance would have been good to have before starting. Additionally, I would have liked to work on more than one team, especially because it was such a big company.

Advice

Always ask the stupid questions. You'll learn a lot more from your job.
