Associate Consultant Intern

June - July 2020 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

Despite the internship being shortened and remote, I still had a great time having hands-on experience with client-facing consulting projects. The mentorship and support I received during the virtual internship is incredible and beyond expectation, and I can feel that everyone at the firm is trying to make the interns feel welcomed.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience had been in person, but given the situation of the pandemic, it really wasn't possible at the time of the internship.

Advice

I would suggest that anyone who have the opportunity to intern with the firm to take advantage of the opportunity, to not feel shy about reaching out to people and sharing your thoughts. The internship opportunity is truly the way for both you and your employer to understand if you are the right fit for the firm.

Associate Consultant Intern

June - July 2020 • Virginia Beach, VA

What I liked

The mentorship was fantastic. I was absolutely blessed to be on two teams with great managers who helped me navigate the process a lot. The training was also very helpful. I loved the analytically focused work and found it to be incredibly engaging.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to go into the office in-person (COVID prevented that possibility). The office is amazing from what I hear.

Advice

Make an effort to learn about Test & Learn and Mastercard's unique qualities if you are an applicant.

Intern

June - August 2019 • O'Fallon, MO

What I liked

I worked for five weeks with the authentication/authorization team, then for five weeks with the physical security engineering team. This gave me a chance to learn more about Corporate Security Operations and to apply many skills that I've learned as a cybersecurity major. I also thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with two exceptional groups of people. I liked learning about the Agile scrum method and working with teams on two continents.

What I wish was different

The intern challenge was not well-organized, and the prizes for winning were inequitable across three locations. As the leader of the team that won, I had to negotiate with HR for prizes, then report to the team as the middle manager how the negotiations went.

Advice

Get on LinkedIn and connect with as many people as possible as a student who's seeking an internship. When a contact wants to know more about you, grab the opportunity. It can easily turn into an internship.

Product Development Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the environment and freedom - as long as you got your work done, you were allowed to work in your own fashion. Personally I spent a lot of time with the other interns from different teams working.

What I wish was different

My position was not a strictly engineering-based role, so the engineering work was not as intensive as I would've liked it to be.

Advice

Try to talk to as many people as you can.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Great culture; they really made sure interns learned a lot and had a good time.

What I wish was different

Advice

Do stuff with your team! I always thought my coworkers would be separate from my friends, but APT made me rethink that :)

Business Consultant Intern

June - August 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

Opportunities to interact with clients over email, phone, and occassionally in person; coworkers friendly and willing to help, for the most part

What I wish was different

The work was not that interesting since it was really just helping clients navigate through the software and deal with simple requests, in other words, it was like software support glorified as consulting, and nothing was particularly analytically challenging or intellectually stimulating; also, more transparency around feedback and the review process

Advice

Negotiate which projects you get put on before accepting an offer, if you do still decide to apply, as some projects may be more interesting than others; otherwise, it seems like the project placements for the summer are pretty much randomly assigned and some interns may have a much better experience as a result

Business Consultant Intern

May - August 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I really liked that there was a good mix of data work, analytics, and client interaction. I got to have a good exposure to each subfield.

What I wish was different

I wish the projects were a bit more involved, although that was more of an exception in my case because of the nature of my project.

Advice

Explore different areas in the company! There are tons of ways to learn more about the other positions (e.g. Database Analyst, PM, etc.) by shadowing or being involved in side-projects. So definitely try if that sounds interesting to you!

Customer Compliance and Fraud Intern

June - August 2018 • Purchase, NY

What I liked

This summer , I really enjoyed interning at Mastercard because the work I was doing was very interesting. I was responsible for investigating different merchants to determine if there was any illegal activity present that would negatively impact Mastercard's brand image.

What I wish was different

A week into my internship, I found out my hiring manager had resigned and was moving on to another company. This was definitely a struggle I had to overcome with the team I was working with. Though it was an unfortunate situation I wish had been different, it taught me how to manage challenging situations.

Advice

My internship was great not only because of the work I was doing, but also the people I was meeting. I would advise connecting with employees throughout the company to learn more about the company and also to ask questions about potential careers.

Product Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Being a part of a company culture that prioritized innovation and learning, getting the opportunity to network and meet really inspiring people within the company, participate in a lot of intern-specific events planned by the University Recruiting team.

What I wish was different

I wish the work I had to do was more challenging or had a bigger impact.

Advice

Never stop asking questions and always thank people for their time. If you enjoyed a speaker's speech, let them know. Everyone you meet, you can learn from. Thank them.

Advisors, Consulting Services Intern

June - August 2018 • Purchase, NY

What I liked

I loved the amount of attention and face time with senior management and senior consultants; they are extremely committed to developing talent. As well, throughout my entire time there I felt as if I were making a real difference and was working on important projects. Most importantly, it felt as if I was building true skills - including both hard and soft skills.

What I wish was different

The one thing I would say is I wish the commute had been a bit shorter, but that's not necessarily something that can be easily changed! Maybe one smaller thing I would add is I would've personally found it helpful if there was more training in terms of technical skills (ex: Excel VBA, etc)

Advice

I would say that this experience heavily depends on your dedication. Mastercard Advisors offers a lot of opportunity for you to take real ownership of your workstreams, and they definitely reward effort where they see it. Because of that, it has a very meritocratic structure which you can take advantage of by putting in the effort that's needed to be seen.

Software Engineer

June - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

The team was very welcoming. I had weekly check ins with my manager. I had a desk mate who was learning to develop for the same team, and we were situated across from the head of the developers so we could always ask questions and not feel left in the dark. I got to develop, test, and merge my own ticket by the end! The interns also had their own side projects to help the International Institute of St. Louis develop a website which helped me bring up my confidence as I have a good amount of experience in that area.

What I wish was different

I wish I had take more object oriented programming classes my junior year to prepare for software engineering since I am studying software development.

Advice

Go in open minded. Don't think about why you are not getting something, but how you can get there.
