Applied Machine Learning Student

May - August 2019 • Claremont, CA

What I liked

I loved the small group size and being able to have one-on-one time with the teachers/program managers. The team made sure we had ample time to learn and do projects while gaining a better understanding of machine learning and AI. We had guest speakers from Google come in and we worked on our professional development skills, too. Overall it was an incredible summer with Google! I wish it had been longer!

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was different was to hold a conversation on diversity within the tech field. One thing that stood out to me was how many people of color were in this program- it really made the culture and environment different and more welcoming. I was surprised we didn't have a conversation on the importance of diversity or what that can do to the projects.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that if you come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn, you will be set! Don't be afraid to ask questions- the team is there to help you and so is the rest of your group!

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2023 • Venice, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work with multiple tools on a project that had impact.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to go deeper into different topics and tools - although 12 weeks is a long time, it's actually quite short in terms of getting an internship project going and finishing it up.

Advice

I would say to keep asking questions, even if it's about small details. It can be really helpful to clarify confusing points before starting to make progress.

STEP Intern

June - September 2020 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Due to covid, the internship was remote. But the intern team still did their best to make the experience as rewarding as possible. My managers and other interns were fantastic and a joy to work with.

What I wish was different

Maybe more information about the benefits and perks available to interns at the company from the start would have been nicer. I kind of had to learn about different opportunities from word of mouth.

Advice

It's an amazing opportunity where you can meet so many brilliant individuals and have so many doors openned for you. If you are fortunate enough to recieve it, don't turn it down!
