I loved how Google cared for its interns with several personal and professional development activities designed especially for interns. Everyone was so welcome to interns and willing to help.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been aware of what would be expected of me before the internship started.

Advice

Go with an open mind to learn a lot of new things and meet a lot of new and cool people. You'll enjoy it

My manager had more time to communicate with me and kept me in the loop that I wasn't on track with expectations

Advice

Check in with your manager and take mid point evaluation seriously. I had all good reviews besides taking initiative enough and working through ambiguity. This led to me not getting the return offer.

What I liked

Lots of freedom, many things to learn, and high impact! Google has a great work-life balance and lots of support for employees even at home. It’s a very supportive work environment as well.

What I wish was different

I wish it were longer! Additionally, there were a few access issues, since it was the first year allowing interns remote access to the Google code base.

Advice

Make sure to learn as much as you can and meet as many people as possible!

What I liked

This internship was a wonderful way to get started in the field of software engineering. The company has an incredibly collaborative work culture and, unsurprisingly, the campuses and amenities were next level. Everything was taken care of, between food, games, and even massages! I also enjoyed the ability to connect with other college students from around, and made some incredible friendships.

What I wish was different

I wish the onboarding process were more organized. The company uses many proprietary resources, and there's a high learning curve. I felt the company could have been more supportive in learning how to work in a more applied environment instead of a purely academic one. I also would have enjoyed more events to have been hosted by the intern team to get to know others more.

Advice

I would say be ready to learn! There's a LOT of information that'll get thrown at you. And don't be afraid to ask questions and reach out to anyone who seems interesting. The full timers love interns.

What I liked

I liked how I had the opportunity to work at the Googleplex this summer! The location is absolutely beatiful, there was so much to explore in all of the surrounding Google buildings, the cafes serve some pretty decent food (for free!), and I got to meet some really amazing people. My summer project was challenging, yes, but I appreciate how much I was able to learn this summer. It was an overall very fulfilling experience!

What I wish was different

Only thing that I would have liked more of were more social events for the SWE interns. It was most of our first time working physically at Google, so having more opportunities to get to know each other would have been nice. Interns did a great job at planning our own events, however.

Advice

Don't allow the imposter syndrome get to you. You're a lot more talented that what you may believe.

What I liked

I liked the culture of Google and the community of Engineers. I liked the project that I had in my hand.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was more longer. It seemed kind of rush to get familiar with the tools and technologies of Google and working on our project right after that.

Advice

Don't be overwhelmed at the beginning. At the beginning, it might be hectic to learn all things at once.

What I liked

I got to work with and learn from some of the most brilliant engineers in the world and work on an interesting challenge in the systems infrastructure space. Everyone was incredibly kind and willing to provide help both at work and in my professional life.

What I wish was different

I wish I had not been fully remote as it made it a bit more difficult to fully connect with other employees and interns.

Advice

Use all the resources you have at your disposal during your internship, especially the engineers you work with. They can provide not only help with your work, but give you great advice for becoming a better engineer and advancing in your career.

The culture of the company, the training time. The mentors and the Project that was Google Education.

Maybe that this was still during Covid Time so I would love to have a different experience going to the office.

What I liked

I loved how the experience helped me become more independent and grow as an engineer. This internship exposed me to new technologies which I used creatively. Google is always innovating and I could definitely see that in those 3 months.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been more transparent about my interests at the project matching stage. This could’ve helped me find an opportunity that fit my skills a bit better. Additionally, it helps to have a team with a couple of women especially in stand ups.

Advice

The best part of internships is exploring and trying everything you’re interested in. It’s the best way to decide what you would like to do for an extended amount of time.
