Audit Intern

July 2020 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Cool experience that had to be shortened and altered due to quarantine. Deloitte did a great job of transforming a 10 week in person internship into a 2 week online experience where I felt like I still took away a lot from.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been in person of course.

Advice

Do your best to network. It’s hard to interact online, but stay engaged.

Tax Accounting Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

From a responsibility standpoint, I enjoyed researching state tax issues and completing compliance work for clients. I had taken a few tax courses in the Whitman school and I believe these experiences helped me with my assignments in an efficient fashion. I also enjoyed how much time my coworkers spent training me and exposing me to as much tax information as possible in my ten-week internship. I was constantly learning new things and this helped me confirm that I wanted to pursue tax as a full-time career.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had received feedback on my work but understand that this can be challenging when business is busy. I appreciated the feedback that I received but I am always looking for more information.

Advice

Always carry a pen and notebook with you. You never know when you will have a question, hear something interesting, or get pulled into a conference call with a client. Taking notes can help solidify new concepts and can be used for reference when completing a task for one of your coworkers.

Financial Advisor Intern

June - August 2019 • Jakarta, Indonesia

What I liked

I loved being involved in projects with big clients (we would go out of town/to different parts of town to meet clients and discuss their projects) because you learn so much.

What I wish was different

I didn't like the environment that I worked at -- I was assigned to the I&CP (Infrastructure and Capital Project) division of financial advisory and I felt that I was looked down upon because I go to university in the U.S. There were some instances of several of my colleagues being rude to me.

Advice

Always ask for something to do because tasks don't come to you if you just wait.

Business Technology Analyst

May - August 2019 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

What I liked most about my experience interning at Deloitte was all the cool people I got the meet. Whether they were employees at the firm or the other interns it made going to work so much fun. I also liked how everyday at Deloitte was different from the one prior. Always something new to learn, and more people to meet!

What I wish was different

I sometimes wish I had reached out to more people to expand my network and actually took time to ask compelling questions that tailored to the specific people. I always wish I had spent more time learning how to use certain programs/software.

Advice

Make everyday worth it. Whether you accept the job offer or not, take these 2 months to really soak in as much information as possible and NETWORK. There are so many different types of people that work at the firm so take the time to really get yourself out there because if you do return, it'll make getting staffed on a project easy!

Audit and Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Deloitte really cherishes its people. Aside from promoting work-life balance, it makes sure to present each employee (including interns) with many opportunities for growth both as a professional in the firm and as a leader in general.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship lasted longer -- I had way too much fun last summer.

Advice

Although technical expertise does come as a plus, I would first focus on building a network both within the firm and the industry as a whole. My most valuable takeaways from the summer lie in the connections I have made.

Risk and Financial Advisory

June - July 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I loved the culture of Deloitte and the entrepreneurial mindset the firm instills in their new hires/interns. Overall, I learned a lot and was able to use both my IS and Finance background on the project I was assigned.

What I wish was different

I have absolutely no complaints and wouldn't change any aspect of the internship. The Internship program Deloitte has in place is really well managed and sets students up for future success.

Advice

Focus on School! GPA really does matter and paying attention in higher level courses will definitely be beneficial regardless of what you do after graduation. Specifically in my case, I was able to apply my knowledge of critical thinking and analytical skills I learned through various courses offered at VCU.
