Bloomberg

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The company is located in the most interesting and diverse city in the US, and you have full access to everything you would want to do! There are many intern events that you can attend, although a lot of them happen before quarterly students make it to Bloomberg, so you may miss out on some events. The pay is really great for an internship, and the various stipends make living in New York for the summer relatively affordable; you will have quite a lot of money left over after expenses in order to do what you want in New York. The work is very team dependent, but I was on a really cool team that had interesting problems and cool projects that were being worked.

What I wish was different

The provided housing is not the best; it is dorm style with shared bathrooms and small kitchens. I instead opted for the equivalent housing stipend and found a better dorm to stay in (24th Street Residence, School of Visual Arts). The internship is, of course, very team dependent. Some people were not particularly keen on the team that they were on, but still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Advice

Get to know the recruiting team (including your interviewers!)! They are very nice and can help you navigate the internship process and keep you updated easily. Many of your interviewers will be Stanford alum or people who like Stanford, so getting to know them is really great.

What I liked

The environment is extremely open - it felt almost like a start-up! I never hesitated to ask a question even to someone I didn't know because everyone at Bloomberg is so enthusiastic about what they do and willing to share any information they have.

Data Analyst

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture at Bloomberg Global Data. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful throughout the summer. Additionally, I thought the intern program was well run. We were given multiple projects that were challenging yet stimulating. These projects introduced us to many people across the company and helped us build our network.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to spend the summer in a city like New York or DC but it was still a great experience.

Advice

I would tell future interns to not be afraid to ask for help from anyone in the company. Everyone is willing to give their expertise for the intern projects and this is a great opportunity to build relationships with future colleagues.

What I wish was different

Location wasn't ideal, but Commute to New York and Philadelphia was very doable for weekends.

Advice

This is a great internship if you have a sense of initiative. No one is gonna demand that you do a tremendous amount, if you want to you will be given resources to do so.

Business Development Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I greatly enjoyed the environment-- I found it to be dynamic, supportive, and learning-oriented. I enjoyed the diverse backgrounds from which both interns and full-time employees came from. I feel that far too often, employers look for students with a very specific area of study, regardless of previous experience, and overlooking those who have studied liberal arts and social sciences.

What I wish was different

I wish there was greater liberty to choose a team after receiving a full-time offer.

Advice

I believe that this was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

There were great intern events, including an Overnight Puzzle Challenge and weekly game nights. Bloomberg employees also get access to almost all major museums / botanical gardens in NYC, so that was a blast! Bloomberg's commitment to service is also phenomenal; interns have a mandatory day of service during which you feel like you made a real impact.

What I wish was different

HR could have done more to facilitate the interns' integration into the professional culture. 1:1's between interns and mentors were not mandatory, and should be. There was also not much support around approaching midterm evals.

Advice

Enjoy the city!

Global Data Intern

June - August 2017 • Princeton, NJ

What I liked

Great people, skillman/princeton office has free food, a lot of time to connect/work on projects outside your immediate responsibilities

What I wish was different

That the office wasn't as technologically backwards as it is, most interns were asked to provide scripts to help automate archaic data processing tasks so data analytics wasn't as much as a priority as it was marketed to be.

Advice

Come in willing to learn about new technologies and you can do a lot of work that brings value to the data teams. Be open to coding!

What I liked

Great company culture; employees are very welcoming to interns, who receive meaningful work. Pantry is a nice plus as well!

Advice

Consider working for a company that positively impacts society, whether that be a company with fantastic CSR initiatives or a non-profit organization. Working at Bloomberg was exciting because the company donates 85% of its profits to charity, so all the work employees do are going to great causes. Volunteering and philanthropy were also embedded in the company’s values.
