Spring 2023 Internship City of Miami Beach - CCE Internships+

This internship is offered through the CCE Internships+ Program at Columbia University. This is a CCE Sponsored Internship Program in which interns participate in professional development programming alongside their internship. Funding is available for select unpaid and low paid opportunities at not-for-profit organizations. All students must be currently enrolled. The City of Miami Beach virtual internship experience will be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom and will be transferable to other employment settings. The selected intern will support departments projects, as it relates to the goals and objectives of the department.
 
The Intern at the City of Miami Beach performs professional staff duties involving analytical work, research, policy/process/procedure creation/recordation, constituent contact, problem resolution and other related duties as assigned.
 
Internships aligned to established work groups may be available in the following areas: Public Works, Environment & Sustainability, Organization Development Performance Initiative, Planning, Transportation, Communications/Marketing, Finance/Budget and other departments as applicable.
 
Undergraduate Intern appointments are for one (1) semester. Must submit Resume, Cover Letter, and Unofficial Transcripts in order to apply.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Researches and drafts departmental policies and procedures for employees/departments
  • Produces correspondence, letters, reports, minutes, memorandum and Requests for Qualifications and Proposals, responds to various information requests
  • Prepares LTCs, memorandum and reports for transmission to the Commission and committees
  • Assists in the preparation of various reports and working papers
  • Performs general research for best practices and innovative initiatives
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • Reporting to the Department Director or designee and the Chief Learning and Development Officer who reviews work, as needed, for conformity with established administrative and departmental practices and procedures and achievement of performance objectives
  • Specific assignments are received from the Department Director or designee and the Chief Learning and Development Officer in the Office of Organization Development Performance Initiatives
  • Supervision will be provided by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • Intern will receive and participate in routine feedback
  • Work is subject to daily review including verification of hours
  • Students must submit a cover letter indicating their preferred area or department placement, along with the resume and transcript.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the use of modern office equipment, including computers sand job related software programs
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and business arithmetic
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees, City officials and the general public
  • Ability to analyze complex policy/process/procedure issues, develop solutions and to formulate alternatives for presentation to superiors
  • Ability to formulate and conduct a research program to identify specific problems or issues, followed by the ability to appropriately analyze and formulate solutions
