Stone Pier Press is a San Francisco-based environmental publishing company with a food focus. We produce books and news that highlight how to eat, grow, and dispose of our food in a way that builds a cooler, kinder, and healthier world. Our thinking is that by focusing on solutions we make it easier for any one of us to act on them.

So we track down the farmers and gardeners who are using methods that mitigate global warming, save water, and raise more nutritious crops. We write about the racial disparities at the root of many food system problems, and how to improve broad access to healthy, green food.

We describe advances in the ways we produce meat, dispose of food waste, and create alternatives to animal-based protein. We make it delicious to serve up plant-based meals, and easy to grow your own food. And lots more.

Our team includes a group of Environmental News & Marketing Fellows who share the good food message and produce our news. To distribute our books, we're partnering with Chelsea Green Publishing, a Vermont-based company long known and respected for its books on sustainable living. We also regularly team up with a growing list of mission-aligned nonprofits and businesses. We encourage BIPOC to apply.

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION
Do you have a way with words, and images? An ability to whip up tremendous enthusiasm for a mission or project? The desire to write news stories, create and lead your own marketing campaigns, produce mini-movies, and develop recipes?

If so, we'd love to hear from you. Our mission is to publish news and books that build a more climate-friendly, humane, and equitable food system. By publishing content that's entertaining and inspirational, we want to remind folks that the food choices we make have a direct impact on the health and well-being of our communities, and our planet.

We also run a Fellowship program that introduces participants to basic skills in environmental news writing and marketing. In doing so, we prepare graduates to become more effective advocates for improving our food system.

Our team of Fellows carries out the following tasks:

Marketing (social media & analytics): Our Fellows get a thorough education in the art and science of social media. Participants learn how to refine messaging, produce visually appealing content and mini-movies, and produce regular reports on our social media performance.

Marketing (events & outreach): Want to be in on the ground floor of launching a book? This is your chance! Our Fellows learn how to develop pitch materials, host author events, and reach out to prospective reviewers to get our books off the ground. It's a solid introduction to basic PR and marketing.

Editorial: You'll get a chance to buff up your writing skills by working with an experienced editor. Interested in editing? We have two bi-monthly newsletters. We also welcome foodies with a passion for plant-based cooking who'd like to share recipes with our audience.

The pluses: We're small which means you get a chance to work on many different projects. Our interns have found illustrators for our books, conducted research for our books, produced book trailers, developed recipes, and hosted author events. This is an educational internship—an opportunity to develop new marketable skills and discover, or further develop, strengths. Each Fellowship cohort typically includes four to six participants.

The nitty gritty: This is a 12-to-15 hour a week job but the hours are flexible. The fall term is September-December. Start and end dates are sometimes negotiable.

We're in San Francisco but you can work from anywhere. What's important is that you're conscientious about showing up, able to meet deadlines, and available for a weekly team call. We offer professional development and training opportunities in writing, digital marketing, and analytics.

Summary: Our goal is to help participants become more effective good food activists and advocates for a healthier food system.

The program is curriculum-based and includes an introduction to environmental news writing, marketing outreach, social media, and independent book publishing.

It trains participants in how to read and use data to build engagement across multiple channels. The Fellowship is also an opportunity to stay on top of and discuss key trends and developments within the good food world.

To apply: Please apply through Handshake, or send a resume and cover letter describing why you’re interested in becoming a News Fellow to team@stonepierpress.org, with “News FeIlowship” in the subject line. If it seems like a fit, we will reach out to set up an interview.

Thank you for your interest!
