Internship Description:

PLAY: Be part of a cutting-edge game-based leadership learning program
LEAD: Guide high school students through coaching and facilitation
CONNECT: Connect leadership to your own life and future career

Leadership is key to a successful and meaningful life. We are committed to help students learn about leadership at an early age, while having fun and making a contribution to society. Through creating a unique learning environment of a simulation game based on the recent challenges in India's micro-finance sector and collaborating on projects with local NGOs, we aim to make this experience fun, rich in learning, and personally impactful for the students and facilitators alike.

In the role of Junior Facilitator, you will work with a Senior Facilitator (Huijin, Agnes, Yvonne, or equivalent - see bio below) to guide a group of high school students through the “Young Leaders of Tomorrow” two-week leadership summer program. The program will focus on practical leadership training through simulation, reflection, substantive learning and hands-on project/consulting experience with local NGOs. Each group of ~6 high school students will work with a Senior and Junior Facilitator. Last summer’s program was a success, please visit http://theopenclassroom.wixsite.com/ylot for details.

You will work with Agnes Kong and Yvonne Chu, seasoned finance professionals and now founders of The Open Classroom (www.theopenclassroom.com.hk), and Huijin Kong, seasoned strategy and leadership consultant, executive, and now entrepreneur, to pioneer an innovative experiential leadership program for high school students. Huijin, Agnes, and Yvonne have all left successful professional services careers to find fun ways to support children and younger adults to learn core skills and knowledge needed for a successful and fulfilling life - communication and interpersonal skills, exposure to different careers, leadership mindset, self-understanding, among others.

Along with the Senior Facilitator, your role will be to

1. Guide a group of high school students to tackle leadership challenges
- Observe their work and simulation outcome and provide feedback
- Facilitate their (self-) reflection and discussion
- Stimulate their thinking about leadership
- Organize field trips to visit professionals and thought leaders of different fields (e.g. biotech, start-up, finance)

2. Collaborate with local NGOs and guide students to work on projects assigned
- Work with local NGOs to clarify objective and key success factors for project (already identified)
- Guide students through the process of executing the project and presenting their final output/advice to NGOs

3. Help high schools students think through their college choices
- Stimulate their thinking about essays and personal statements
- Share your experience
- Provide feedback and guidance to various aspects of college application preparation (e.g. interviews)

In doing this role, you will practice core leadership skills and gain hands-on experience through business projects
- Coaching and facilitation: help an individual or group think through an issue together, rather than have any one person "give" the answer
- People leadership: motivate a group and its individual members to successfully tackle a challenge; help each member develop
- Learn how to think about a difficult leadership challenge
- Practice applying leadership and business skills through guiding students to work on a consulting project for a local NGO

Who we are looking for
- Passionate in working with high school students and making an impact on their (and your own) learning
- Keen to learn about leadership required in complex and global business and social environments
- Curious about how to bridge difference of opinions and positions
- Interested in learning about social issues and connecting with local NGOs
Past leadership and teaching experience is valued, but not mandatory.
