Summer 2021 Development & Event Intern

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, seeks a thoughtful and detail-oriented development and events intern with strong writing, research, planning and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will be motivated, deadline-driven and adept at balancing and prioritizing a variety of tasks, and interested in a career in development and/or non-profits. The internship will provide experience and skill-development in project management and fundraising, especially related to events, and will include opportunities to interact with and learn from other departments and staff in the organization, including participation in the Legal Intern summer program.

The NYCLU
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation’s leading advocates on behalf of constitutional rights and liberties. Founded in 1951, as the New York affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, the NYCLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization with 140,000 member-donors, and nine offices statewide. We work in the courts, in the legislatures and on the streets to advocate for racial and economic justice, free speech, freedom of religion, privacy and equality before the law for all New Yorkers. For more information please visit our website: www.nyclu.org.

The Development Team
The NYCLU Development Department seeks to secure the financial resources necessary to support the NYCLU’s mission, strategic plan, and work plan. We engage and partner with our members as well as individual and institutional philanthropists. Within the NYCLU, we work closely with other departments on donor messaging and communications to promote brand awareness and educate stakeholders who are concerned with advancing civil liberties and civil rights in New York and the United States. We are a results- and values-driven team with professional and committed members who respect each other and our donor-partners.

NYCLU and ACLU Events
The ACLU and NYCLU’s LGBTQ Rights & HIV Project Reception is an annual networking reception raising funds for the ACLU’s and NYCLU’s LGBT rights work, featuring our staff and clients, supported and attended by more than 300 guests, including young professionals and top talent from leading law firms and companies. The reception attracts a diverse array of ACLU and NYCLU supporters who are accomplished professionals and who support, or are affiliated with, the LGBTQ community. In 2020 the event was held virtually on the platform Hopin and we expect to hold another virtual event in June, 2021.

The 19th annual Sing Out for Freedom (previously Broadway Stands Up for Freedom) benefit concert will be held in the fall of 2021. Every year, the concert highlights a theme important to the work of the ACLU/NYCLU. The concert includes performers and speakers from Broadway and beyond that inspire supporters and remind all that the ACLU and NYCLU’s work to defend civil liberties in New York and across the country is more vital than ever. In 2020 the event was held virtually on YouTube and we expect to hold a hybrid event in 2021.
