Summer 2020 WGBH News Digital Intern - Navab Fellowship Program

Navab Fellowship PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This internship is offered through the Navab Fellowship Program. This is a CCE Sponsored Internship Program in which interns participate in professional development programming alongside the internship which is sourced by a Columbia College alumnus. Fellowship awards are given to students in lawful unpaid and low-paid opportunities for travel and living expenses. Additionally, eligible participants on financial aid have their summer earnings expectation waived. Programming includes attending a Pre-Program Training, mid-semester check-in with a career counselor, end-of-program Reflection Session as well as completion of an individual development plan and project. These elements will support success in the internship experience itself, help you learn more about the related industry or type of work, as well as help you prepare for and plan next steps after the experience. Navab Fellowship Program internship dates vary by position but typically take place over the course of May - August, 2020. Navab Fellowship Program positions and the program are open to CC students only. All Navab Fellowship Program Summer 2020 positions will be posted on LionSHARE during December 2019/Spring 2020 semester on a rolling basis. To find Navab Fellowship Program internship postings, search under the Internships tab on LionSHARE, and use the “Label” function. There is no application limit for Navab Fellowship Program positions.

You must be in good academic and judicial standing with Columbia University to be eligible to participate in the program. By submitting an application, you authorize the Center for Career Education to conduct academic and disciplinary checks to confirm program eligibility. Certain University policy violations may disqualify you from consideration for the program.

·        International students (F1) need to secure US employment authorization. When considering applying for a position, you should connect with your Academic Advisor and ISSO to determine the process. Pre-Completion OPT (Optional Practical Training – USCIS processing may take 3-5 months) or CPT (Curricular Practical Training – ISSO will process within 2-3 weeks). You must have either the OPT EAD approval, or the CPT approval to begin your internship on the agreed upon start date. Visit the Columbia International Students & Scholars Office employment section to learn more. Students should keep abreast of authorization processing times. 

 POSITION Description: 

*This is an unpaid position. A Fellowship award will be given to this intern for travel, housing, and living expenses as well as financial aid to cover the cost of your Columbia student contribution should you have one. Part-time positions will receive a pro-rated stipend and coverage for student contribution.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
WGBH News Digital is a dynamic team with a wide breadth of editorial responsibilities, including creating original content, copy-editing the digital component of television and radio stories, and strategizing impactful social media features. We focus on local stories that have national impact and national stories that say something about how we are living our lives in New England.
JOB OVERVIEW
We are looking for a self-starter who with excellent news judgement, who is up to the challenge of tackling many different projects — often with competing deadlines — throughout the day. This person will work closely with our audience engagement editor to create social media posts, write data heavy-stories and make sure the site is up-to-date with the latest news. You will get hands-on experience with digital journalism in a fast-paced newsroom.

• Work on breaking news
• Work with our staff on photo shoots and other visual assignments

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Social media savvy
• Previous experience in media or journalism
• Sharp attention to detail
• Some photography or visual journalism experience preferred, if interested in focusing on photography
