Summer 2019 Technical Intern - Navab Fellowship Program

Navab Fellowship Program Description:

This internship is offered through the Navab Fellowship Program. This is a CCE Sponsored Internship Program in which interns participate in professional development programming alongside the internship which is sourced by a Columbia College alumnus. Fellowship awards are given to students in lawful unpaid and low-paid opportunities for travel and living expenses and for all participants on financial aid to cover the cost of your student contribution. Programming includes attending a Pre-Program Training, mid-semester check-in with a career counselor, end-of-program Reflection Session as well as completion of an individual development plan and project. These elements will support success in the internship experience itself, help you learn more about the related industry or type of work, as well as help you prepare for and plan next steps after the experience. Navab Fellowship Program internship dates vary by position but typically take place over the course of May - August, 2019. Navab Fellowship Program positions and the program are open to CC students only. All Navab Fellowship Program Summer 2019 positions will be posted on LionSHARE during December 2018/Spring 2019 semester on a rolling basis. To find Navab Fellowship Program internship postings, search under the Internships tab on LionSHARE, and use the “Label” function. There is no application limit for Navab Fellowship Program positions.

You must be in good academic and judicial standing with Columbia University to be eligible to participate in the program. By submitting an application, you authorize the Center for Career Education to conduct academic and disciplinary checks to confirm program eligibility. Certain University policy violations may disqualify you from consideration for the program.

 International students need to apply for Pre-Completion OPT (Optional Practical Training) or F-1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) as these are off-campus internship experiences. Visit the Columbia International Students & Scholars Office employment section to learn more. 

Position Description:

*This is a paid position. Additionally, a Fellowship award will be given to this intern to cover the cost of your Columbia student contribution should you have one. 
 
The NYC Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) designs and implements the City’s brownfield cleanup and redevelopment initiatives.
The NYC Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) offers remedial oversight and liability protection to property owners and developers in New York City.
Brownfields are sites where redevelopment is complicated by the presence of contamination, such as from prior site uses, historic fill, or chemical spills. The office manages the NYC Clean Soil Bank that arranges the reuse of clean soil from deep excavations, providing substantial financial and environmental benefits.
OER also administers the Brownfield Incentive Grant program, which provides funding for site investigation and cleanup as well as grants to support community-based redevelopment. Additional OER initiatives include the E‐Designation Review Program for hazardous materials, air quality, and noise; Green Property Certification; and community engagement activities.

The technical intern will report to project managers and learn about environmental contamination and cleanup, land development, soil management, and NYC and NYS environmental regulations. Interns conduct research, draft documents, and attend meetings regarding environmental cleanup projects. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of environmental sciences, geology, and/or engineering and a desire to learn about urban contaminants and remediation. Examples of intern responsibilities include:
• Assist with technical review of NYC cleanup projects and project documentation • Attend consultant meetings to gain understanding of the remediation industry • Research regulatory guidance, soil disposal, funding sources, and historical OER remediation projects • Assist with OER’s community-focused initiatives (e.g. PURE soil, community gardens) • Provide outreach, planning, and support for brownfield workshops and events • Work with the NYC Brownfield Partnership and its community benefit programs • Research OER Cleanup Projects and update information in project management database Internships are part of the Mayor’s Office Internship Program, which may include a speaker series and a service project, as well as the work assignment at OER.

Qualifications:
• Demonstrated college coursework or work experience in: environmental or brownfield investigation/remediation, geology, hydrogeology, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or chemical engineering;•Interest in economic development, real estate, urban planning, and government preferred; • Demonstrated analytical, time management, and leadership skills; • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently; • Proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); • Experience with MS Access; HTML; Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and InDesign; and/or GIS software (e.g. Carto) and/or open source mapping applications (e.g. Google Earth) (preferred).
• Candidates must be an enrolled and registered student accumulating credits toward matriculation at an accredited college.
Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college.
