Spring Development & Communications Intern - KCCAP@CU

Job Description:

This internship is offered through the Kenneth Cole Community Action Program @ Columbia University. This is a CCE Sponsored Internship Program in which interns participate in professional development programming alongside their internship. This includes attending a Pre-program training, Mid-semester dinner, and end-of-program Reflection session as well as completion of a reflection project. These elements will support success in the internship experience itself, help students learn more about the related industry or type of work, as well as help students prepare for and plan next steps after the experience. Positions in this program offer a $1,000 stipend for the spring semester internship. The Laundromat Project has an internship available for an individual interested in assisting with the nourishment of creative community leaders through marketing, community engagement, fundraising, special events, and administrative operations. Proactive and passionate individuals will get hands-on experience in a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the intersection of art, community, and social justice.

 

The weekly schedule would take place between 10-6pm Monday through Friday at our office in Harlem.

 

The intern will work closely with The LP’s Development & Communications team to support day-to-day administrative and development operations, digital communications and storytelling, special events, and donor & volunteer stewardship.

 

Projects and responsibilities may include:

Supporting social media and email communications through content collection, creation, scheduling, and analytics

Creating and publishing written and multimedia content for our digital platforms

Assisting with design and production of print and online collateral

Providing key support in managing, editing, and organizing The LP’s digital assets and portfolio of written and designed communications

Researching individual and corporate prospects

Managing contact info for our community members, press, and donors

Supporting stewardship efforts with donors and volunteers

Assistance with planning of and on-site support at special events for our community of supporters

Supporting logistics and communications for fundraising and marketing campaigns

Tracking donations from individual and corporate donors

Preparing printed materials for board and donors

Supporting our volunteer program

Coordinate with and support Development & Communications team and other LP staff as needed

 

Application Instructions:

This position is part of the Kenneth Cole Community Action Program @ Columbia University. All 2018 spring internships will be posted on LionSHARE during the Fall 2017 semester on a rolling basis beginning in late September. (Search for the label "KCCAP@CU" under the “Labels” field in LionShare to view all program positions.) You may apply to up to three (3) positions of interest in the Kenneth Cole Community Action Program @ Columbia University. You must be in good academic and judicial standing with Columbia University to be eligible to participate in the program.

There are at least two required components to all Kenneth Cole Community Action Program @ Columbia University position applications and potentially more as requested by each employer. The following documents must be submitted through LionSHARE for each position of interest:

  1. Resume
  2. Transcript (This is your Fall 2017 course schedule which you should access by logging onto Student Services Online, clicking on “My Schedule” and copying and pasting your Fall 2017 course schedule into a Microsoft Word Document. The schedule should show your full name, your school, your Fall 2017 Courses, and your enrollment status.)
  3. Cover Letter (if required - click Apply Now and check for required documents)
  4. Other materials (ex: Writing Sample, etc. if required - click Apply Now and check for required documents)

Qualified candidates will meet the minimum requirements:

An understanding of The LP’s mission and values

Consistent attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Candidate must also be reliable and punctual.

Willingness to learn and deepen skills around nonprofit operations, event coordination, and marketing & PR

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proofreading experience

Proactive ability to juggle multiple tasks, manage priorities and time well, and collaborate with others on projects

Proficiency in Google Apps, Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Creative Suite software: InDesign, Illustrator, & Photoshop

Basic graphic design experience with printed materials and simple digital graphics

Familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and a willingness to better understand these platforms

Positive and professional demeanor and a flexible, can-do attitude

Curiosity and a sense of humor and fun

 

Additional preferred, but not required skills and qualities:

An interest in fundraising or business development and/or prior experience with special events production, volunteer management, and/or fundraising

Enjoys creating and improving procedures and systems

Experience using email marketing clients, such as Mailchimp

Experience with CRMs and/or donor databases

Proficiency in HTML

Working experience with Wordpress

Knowledge and experience working with Hootsuite and Snapchat

Experience with photography, film, and/or media production
