Spring Theatre Education Intern - CAE

This internship is offered through the Columbia Arts Experience (CAE). This is a CCE Sponsored Internship Program in which interns participate in professional development programming alongside their internship. This includes attending a Pre-program training, Mid-semester dinner, and end-of-program Reflection session as well as completion of a reflection project. These elements will support success in the internship experience itself, help students learn more about the related industry or type of work, as well as help students prepare for and plan next steps after the experience. Positions in this program offer a $600 stipend for the spring semester internship. To learn more about the CAE, go to https://www.careereducation.columbia.edu/programs/columbia-arts-experience

Internship Description:

The 52nd Street Project, an organization that creates original theater with inner-city children and volunteer theater artists, is seeking an intern to assist in all aspects of production, classes and administration. This position is extremely hands-on. The intern will work closely with the staff, with children in classes and rehearsals, as well as with a number of professional actors, directors, designers, and stage managers from the New York theater community.

Candidates should have ample experience with children and/or teens, and should be available to work with us 10-20 hours a week.

The internship offers an opportunity to:
• Learn about non-profit theater and help out backstage with professional productions of children's plays.
• Experience first-hand the daily activities of a successful and established non-profit arts organization.
• Work closely with middle- and high-school aged students from the NYC public school system.
• Learn about after-school education and the administration of a mentoring program.
• Accompany kids on field trips to Broadway and off-Broadway theater productions.
• Join a fun and creative community of working theater-makers in New York City.

Responsibilities include:
• Working with the Associate Artistic Director in playwriting and acting workshops by assisting young people in the classes.
• Assisting the Program Director in workshops as part of our New Platforms programs, such as Filmmaking, Dancemaking, and Photography.
• Assisting the Production Manager in all areas of production for our spring semester shows (Two-on-Two’s and Playmaking). Performances occur at our own Five Angels Theater.
• Assisting the Education Director with administrative duties and working directly with children in our after-school Homework Help program, and on special events such our Ping Pong Tournament.
• Participating on weekend retreats to the country where the artists and young people collaborate. Duties on these retreats range from running lines with actors to chopping onions for dinner to “kid wrangling” at the beach, bowling alley, etc.
• Assisting the Executive Director and Development Director with our yearly Gala in May and with administrative duties such as fundraising, marketing, and general office tasks.

This is a really good deal! Because we are a small organization, our internship offers an exceptional first-hand experience of how a non-profit operates. The kids are great, the staff is fun and amicable, and the position offers excellent exposure to many New York theater artists.
